Welcome to Reception Red!

Hello! My name is Miss Williams and I am so excited to be your teacher this year!

This year, Reception Red will be taught by Miss Williams and Miss McCutcheon. Mrs. Nicholson will be covering in class on Wednesday mornings. We have two classes in reception, which will work alongside each other, to provide your children with a wealth of interesting, motivating and challenging learning opportunities. This year we will be working hard to develop our early reading, writing and mathematics skills. We will be taking part in a lot of physical activities both indoors and outdoors, and will be working with Mr Riley, our sports coach, who will help us to develop our fundamental skills as part of the PE curriculum. We will also be taking part in weekly music lessons with our music specialist, Mrs Stuart.

This half term in reception, we will be learning all about 'minibeasts!' Over the next five weeks, children will be learning about a range of insects through key quality texts and practical hands-on experiences, such as bug hunts and creating our own class 'wormery!'

Key Texts:

Week 1 – 2: Our first key text will introduce ‘Superworm!’ Children will be immersed into the story as we look for the missing Superworm in our classroom. We will be creating missing posters and using our phonic and tricky word knowledge to write simple descriptions of an earthworm. We will be picking out new vocabulary from the story to ‘Word Rap’ to  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=428l9PIED_I ) and add to our collection of words on our   ‘Word Wall!” We will be using our early prediction skills to think of a ‘cunning plan’ to save Superworm from Wizard Lizard.

Week 3 - Argh Spider:This week we will be learning all about ‘spiders!’ As we read this story we will be thinking about the feelings of the characters and how our actions might make others feel. We will be thinking about the question, ‘Do spiders make good pets?’ as we explain our reasoning through language, drawings and in our early writing. We will be using non-fiction texts to support our knowledge on spiders and learning a catchy spider rhyme to help us to remember key facts!

Week 4-5: Over the final two weeks, we will be reading the story of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar.’ Children will become very familiar with this story as we sequence the story linked to the days of the week. As we delve deeper into the story, children will be investigating the foods that the hungry caterpillar ate over the week and sort them into healthy and unhealthy foods!

Our Maths curriculum is in-line with the rest of the school, as we follow the Singaporean Approach that is 'Maths! No Problem.' This half term we will be beginning our maths learning by identifying and comparing measurements, before moving on to 'capacity.' During week 2, we will be learning all about 2d and 3d shapes, as we identify each shape by describing their properties, we will then begin to use Tangram puzzles to create own own shapes and patterns.
Later in the term, we will be focusing on 'counting.' Our key focuses will be: Counting on to add, counting forwards and backwards, and counting to 20.

To support your children this half term you can:

  • Write your child's name in ALL of their belongings, we have a HUGE amount of unnamed belongings!
  • Ensure that your child is appropriately dressed for the weather
  • Practise writing simple sentences with your children.
  • Share lots of books including your child's reading book, each night.
  • Practise getting dressed and undressed independently, for example taking a jumper off can be very tricky.

We appreciate all of your support as your children begin their learning journey in Reception. If you have any questions please feel free to contact school and we will help you as best we can.
