Computing

Computing in CLASP

The children at Bewsey Lodge Academy look at 2 different computing aspects through our CLASP sessions.

In Year 3 & 4, the children spend time diving into the coding side of computing. The children use the Scratch website for block-based coding and they work on completing a series of challenges where the coding skills are progressively more complex, building on previously taught skills and spending some time applying these skills to different projects.

In Year 5 & 6, the children learn how to use CAD - Computer Aided Design. The children use computers to help design and create real things to take home.

The children in Year 5 learn to use a piece of software called Cricut Design Space. This piece of software works in 2D, and the children create a personalised doorhanger. The children use the various tools to create the doorhanger template shape they want to use before it is cut using a machine. Once the doorhanger is cut out, the children design and create a vinyl sticker using the same software that is then cut out and transferred onto their doorhanger.

The children in Year 6 learn to use a piece of software called TINKERCAD. This software works in 3D, so the children have to learn how to manipulate shapes to create a product. The children complete a series of challenges to help them to understand the tools and then use their new skills to design a personalised keyring. The keyring design is downloaded and printed using our 3D printer.
