Skills for life!

Our cooking unit is based upon the Key Stage 2 Design and Technology program of study.

The children in Year 4 began the half term by learning how to be safe when preparing food. They understand the importance of food hygiene and how this prevents cross contamination in a preperation area, alongside how to use utensils and equipment such as sharp knives, graters and a hob.

This half term focussed on foods around the world, so before making anything themselves, the children got to try foods from various countries, many of which they hadn’t tried before. Then across several weeks they cooked dishes that originated from countries such as Mexico, China and Italy! In addition to this, the children learned about processed and unprocessed foods, how certain food groups are grown and reared to become the food we eat today and the healthy options available.

There was lots of chopping and preparing of foods, and the children learned how to use a hob safely, encouraging them to be as independent as possible in helping make meals for themselves to take home. As with all CLASP subjects, the groups are small so there's lots of teacher time, building on prior learning whilst expanding their skill set. It has been great fun and the children have acquired skills for life!
